The 2019 Washington REALTORS® Legislative Day in Olympia, WA was a success! This past Thursday, I and my REALTOR® colleagues from around the state (about 500 of us!) were adorned in our “Unlock the Door” blue scarves as we visited with our local senators and representatives on the Capitol campus.

I and my Thurston County REALTORS® met with Senator Sam Hunt of the 22nd District. He and his intern (and I apologize, I did not catch his name) spent quite a bit of time with us, which we appreciated. We discussed with him three bills in the Unlock the Door campaign for affordable homeownership:
- Reform the condominium liability law
- Align the short plat definition with the ecology SEPA rules
- Ensure urban density in suburban and urban areas
Our next stop was visiting with Representative Laurie Dolan in the 22nd District. What I appreciated most is her acknowledgment of our commitment as REALTORS® to building a better community. Afterall, that is her goal, too. She thanked us for bringing these bills to her attention and giving her a broader understanding of what passing these bills would mean for Thurston County residents.
On this day alone, 140 scheduled meetings happened between REALTORS® and Legislators. The response was positive for the Unlock the Door initiative and this was a good start to the legislative season. Our work is in no way finished but we will continue to work towards building better communities in Washington State.
