The Chehalis Western Trail is a 22-mile paved trail that runs through the Indian Summer residential neighborhood. Although the trail is a public trail and part of the Thurston County Parks system, Indian Summer residents can access the trail from the southern part of the neighborhood on Prestwick Lane SE, between the townhomes on Fairway Lane and The Links (the newer development of Indian Summer).
Because the trail was a railroad where the Chehalis Western Railroad operated from 1926 to the mid-1980s, the trail is level and is great for walking, running and bicycling.
If you are up to a 22-mile jaunt, you can start at the north end of the trail, which is in North Olympia at Woodard Bay and go south all the way to Rainier. There the trail splits in an east/west direction on the Yelm-Tenino Trail, which is 14.5 miles.
